New Year Revolution

by Craig Nielson MA, CPC

Why do so many people who make New Year resolutions fail to see them through? Gym memberships sky rocket at the beginning of the year.  In the weeks that follow gyms are packed with well intentioned new members who set out to finally get into shape and make that wishful transformation.  Soon the crowds in the gym dwindle as the majority of new members lose motivation and quit coming as they give up on their goals. They return to the same habits and behaviors they are comfortable with and have known all their lives.

Dr Keiner

The truth of the matter is that for many a New Year resolution is just another form of procrastination.  It creates an opportunity to escape the work that is necessary to make the change that is wished for.  It also creates a false sense that the change will actually happen.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines resolution as  “the act of finding an answer to a conflict, problem, etc. : the act of resolving something.”  Not very motivating.  Conflicts and problems are not very appealing.  Alternatively, Merriam-Webster’s second definition of  revolution is “a sudden, extreme, or complete change in the way people live, work, etc.”  Now that’s more like it.

Transformation requires major change in the way you work, play, eat, sleep, manage your time, and most of all…how you think.  Following are a few tips to help you develop a revolutionary mindset so you can get on track to obtaining the transformation you’ve always dreamed of.

Create unwavering desire

Don’t think to yourself “I need to get in shape.”  Need carries negative energy.  You need a doctor when you’re sick and you need water to prevent dehydration. You don’t need to get in shape.  You’ve been getting along OK not being in shape, right?  To begin a transformation you have to chose it.  See it as an opportunity to bring into your life all the benefits you will experience as a result of your transformation.  Imagine how it will feel to be healthy, have more energy, sleep better, and wake up beaming with self-confidence.  Picture in your mind what you will look like as a result of your transformation.  Visualize this often to keep your motivation alive.

Embrace change

If nothing changes, then nothing changes.  Be willing to become uncomfortable by moving out of your comfort zone.  The degree of change you want as a result of your transformation is equal to the amount of change you’ll need to make within yourself and for yourself.  This may require drastic changes in your routine, who you socialize with and a complete break from the way you’ve always done things.  Focus on what your transformation will bring you and not on what you’ll be leaving behind.

Commit to it

Creating change requires discipline.  In everything you do, chose thoughts and behaviors that are in alignment with your goal.  Don’t let yourself get distracted by things that bring you instant gratification.  For example, you make time to go to the gym but now you just got invited to go out with friends.  Happy Hour with your friends is much more appealing to you than grinding it out  at the gym so you decide the gym will still be there tomorrow.  Remember, choosing to go to the gym is consistent with bringing all the benefits you will experience as a result of your transformation into your life.  Going to Happy Hour will not.  If your friends are truly your friends, they will be there tomorrow as well.

Making a major change in your life is not easy, but it is possible.  Live in that possibility. Any day is a good day to start a revolution for yourself.  Right here right now defines who you are and give you the chance to decide who you want to be.  Stir up the passion and desire deep from within and let the revolution begin.
