Finding Your Shape by Britton Murdock

I subconsciously discovered a life hack that has improved my confidence: Women do not dress in clothes that flatter their body shape. This might sound elementary, but it’s a topic that is not touched on enough.

 

Everyone has a different body shape and there are certain styles and cuts that will flatter that shape. Oftentimes, people don’t know what their shape is or they label themselves as one of four categories: pear shape, hourglass shape, apple shape, and athletic shape. While these labels can be helpful as a starting point, we are all unique and our bodies don’t always fit into these cookie-cutter classifications.

Keep in mind is that finding what flatters your body shape and makes you feel confident does not happen overnight and is an ongoing journey. You are not going to wake up one day and say, “I look great in cap sleeves, boot cut pants, and empire waist pencil skirts.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. It takes time and experimentation.

 

I discovered what looks good on my body type and I have noticed that it is easier to get dressed each day. I am 5’8” and have an athletic build. I have a long torso and shorter shapely legs. I was getting frustrated with how my clothes looked on me so I started to experiment with different styles. I thought to myself: what is in my closet that I feel the best in? I pulled out all of my favorite tops, jeans, dresses and then examined these pieces to see what made me feel great in them. I noticed a few themes and ultimately found what flatters my body type.

 

I found that high waisted pants give the illusion that my legs are longer. This was huge for me and now I only buy high waisted pants. As an example, let’s say you have long skinny legs and tend to carry weight in your mid section. I would recommend skinny jeans and flowing tops. Here is my tip: accentuate what you love about yourself! If you love your legs, show them. If you have killer arms, flash them. If you have curves, rock them. Focus on what you love about yourself, not what you don’t. Don’t worry about fitting into every trend. Find what works for you and it will never go out of style.

 

Shopping for what flatters you is a mindset. Only make purchases of clothing that both flatter you and make you feel confident. I have carried this practice over into my business as the owner of The Biggest Little Fashion Truck. I guide customers to pieces that will flatter them while still staying within their style.

 

I always say: never underestimate the power of a woman who feels comfortable and confident in what she is wearing.

Remember that finding your body shape is a journey that will evolve as you get more comfortable with what fits. Accentuate what you love about yourself and experiment with different clothing types. Here is my challenge for you, as this holiday season approaches: get one new outfit that you feel flatters your body shape and rock it! Embrace the confidence that will ensue along with the compliments that will come pouring in.
